It's too Expensive
In-house Computational Fluid Dynamics IS expensive. You need high level software that comes with a high level price tag, a computer with enough muscle to get the job done before the design is due and someone who knows what they're doing to drive it. So if you want to set yourself up it’s not going to come cheap.
By outsourcing a CFD specialist on a particular aspect or all of the design, your project can benefit from this technology, offering a competitive advantage at a cost-effective price.
One size fits all
It’s often thought if a particular solution is good for one problem it’ll be good for another. Unfortunately this is not always the case, especially when applying CFD to boats; different problems lend themselves to different solution techniques.
For example a linear wave making method can give good results if you’re interested in how the wash from a boat may impact on the shoreline but won’t give good results as to the effect on performance of many detailed hull features. A RANS code, on the other hand, will be able to quantify the effects of details with a high degree of accuracy but is likely to dampen out the wave pattern a significant distance away from the hull surface.
Myths of CFD Exposed: “That stuff is just for the big boys”
Many Naval Architects see CFD as the domain of the ‘top end’, only used by Navy, America’s Cup teams and ultra high performance high budget enterprises. This perception scares designers away from CFD and often people think projects aren’t complicated enough to benefit from the type of analysis CFD can provide. But there is no reason for this to be the case with NHFD providing the hardware, software and specialist knowledge all a Naval Architect needs is a desire to make his design the best it can be.
